Human Nature – Last Christmas
From Jim Fazi: “Human Nature had a single in November 1996 called “Wishes”. And in December of the same year the single was re-released with an added track. This track being their cover of Last Christmas. Also the Japanese release of this same single featured Last Christmas. It’s a really heavy pop sounding version.”
And he also has some more info on the a capella version we posted already: “Human Nature’s first album ‘Telling Everybody’ (1997) was re-released 2 times. And one of these times had an extra disc. A red disc. And track 4 on this red disc is the acapella of Last Christmas. Lastly Human Nature’s single ‘People Get Ready’ (December 1997) features the acapella of ‘Last Christmas.’”

Applied Communications – Last Christmas
Oh, how we love Max, aka Applied Communications. This was recorded live on Dec. 20th on a rooftop in Guadalajara, Mexico. What’s interesting is this is the first version to our knowledge that includes a bit from the lost-love’s perspective. Also, I’m not sure if Max planned this, but the dog barking in the background really adds a level of dejection that the original version seems to need. It’s brief but brilliant! You can see the video of the event here.
Of his current projects, Max says, “I have a brand new 6 song EP called “III”, I’m currently on a tour of the US and Mexico (about half of which is with my good buddy emperor x), and my website has a ton of free mp3s. Life is awesome.”
Bear Flag Revolt – Last Christmas
Matt Saunders has this to say about his band’s version:
“I was actually planning on recording a version of Wham!‘s “Last Christmas” before I came across your site. I was aware of maybe one or two covers… but I don’t think I would have ever guessed around 150. At first, I was dismayed that so many people had covered it, but then after giving it some thought, I decided to go through with it and be a part of something special. This song really is a little gem… This track is also located at the myspace of my band, Bear Flag Revolt. It used to be a full band that played indie pop/rock tunes, but we’re going through some turnover right now. I’m currently trying to sort of re-imagine the band’s sound. We’ve been on a little hiatus this past month, but I wanted to give myself a project and ‘Last Christmas’ is what came out. Hope you guys enjoy!”
Ok, so maybe this one wasn’t just for us, but it’s a new version all the same, and we appreciate the honor of premiering it. Thanks, Matt!
UPDATE: Return of the Ice Cube Trays – Last Christmas
We have one more entry into the exclusives category that we were unable to post earlier due to… well… Christmas stuff. But we can safely say this is one of the most intriguing versions to become a part of your next holiday mix. The Return of the Ice Cube Trays have taken it upon themselves to not record lyrics, instead sampling movie lines to create the vocals. Genius! It’s amazing because it adds a level of separation between songwriter and object of affection. Does that make it more sincere in its inability to directly communicate?
Many, many people have been waiting for us to post this one. People love the Duff. So do we.
Whigfield – Last Christmas
A lot of people have been waiting for this one, too. Well, here it is. Now here’s something interesting: in 2005, Whigfield collaborated on the Benassi Bros album Phobia. You might recognize the name “Benassi” from Day 6, when we posted the Benny Benassi remix of “Last Christmas!” Another coincidence…?
Lumino – Last Christmas
More international hip-hop!
Robert Blanco – Last Christmas
This is the shortest dance version we’ve come across, clocking in at just under two minutes.
Nikki Webster – Last Christmas
Nikki Webster doesn’t try anything particularly new in her version, but she sounds like a sweet lady.
Kenji Astrobeats – Last Christmas
This is another fun hip-hop version. Um…yeah.
Ray Hamilton Orchestra – Last Christmas (Ballroom Dance Instrumental)
Let’s think about this for a second… This one’s labeled as the “ballroom dance instrumental.” So it’s intended to be danced to, probably at ballroom dance competitions and whatnot. Therefore it stands to reason there must be some sort of dance steps for “Last Christmas.” It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
Cary Baskin – Last Christmas
Cary Baskin really fills a gap by providing us with a sax-based version. It’s slow, it’s sexy, and it’s awesome.
This is what happens when you look out the window next to the teddy bear—you see an awesome boy band sing “Last Christmas.”
If you’ve ever met someone named Piet, you probably know exactly what this version sounds like.
J – Last Christmas
This version of “Last Christmas” is brought to you by the letter J. It’s kinda breathy, and there’s that knuckle-cracking sound effect every once in a while. A last-minute email while preparing this post sheds some light on the track. Dax writes, “His is from a CD entitled “2004 Christmas Story” and is by the Korean group J.” So that’s the scoop.
7th Heaven – Last Christmas
Don’t let the calm introduction fool you—as soon as he says, “Happy Christmas,” get ready for… another frantic dance version.
Gerard Joling – Last Christmas
This version is pretty traditional, but I’m strangely drawn to it. It has a nice efficiency to it, like Gerard had a list of things he wanted to include, and then just checked them off one-by-one in the studio. Nice work.
Bahay Krew – Last Christmas
This guys do a pretty awesome mix over the Rap Allstars version. It’s nice, this is probably one the more interesting hip-hop version (and lengthier) in that the switches also include multiple languages. It’s nice to know that around Christmas, we can be all inclusive and hold hands in celebrating through music. Or something.
Cat Tien – Last Christmas
It’s funny how many versions of versions exist in the “Last Christmas” universe. Cat Tien uses the Darren Hayes version as her starting point and does a take that’s little heavier than his. Honestly, it sounds more certain. Maybe Cat knows that last Christmas, she was hanging out with a schmuck and shes much better than that. She’s over it. You go girl!
Mihalis Hatzigiannis – Last Christmas
Mihalis does a standard pop take on the song, but here’s his schtick…he gets the Kidz Bop kids to be his back-up singers! This gives him, in my mind, an odd pied-piper type of take on the song. Like rather than spend time worrying about love, he’s devoting his time to needy children. I can just see the children skipping along, following him to visit Santa at the mall or something.
Busted – Last Christmas (Live)
According to the Busted boys, “this is our very deranged version of ‘Last Christmas.’” I’ve got news for you, Busted. We have presented way more deranged versions throughout our 22 days than what you’re giving us right now. But thanks for playing, we have some wonderful parting gifts for you.
DJ Cotter – Last Christmas
This is the version to listen to if you don’t have much time to dance. It’s freakin’ fast! It’s by DJ Cotter, and in case you forget, he reminds you several times during the song (like every good DJ should).
Goonie K – Last Christmas (Smurfenjump Mix)
This is an interesting beats n’ such version. It’s almost chipmunky in the sped up intro, and (strangely) you wish it would sway more in that direction. But the weird thing is, this version seems to use bits from a number of other versions… or am I hearing things?
Jou Ryu Girls – Last Christmas
This track is by amateur artists the Jou Ryu Girls. Their band page at Soundclick.com has this to say, “We’ve just started… there’s not much history, but Song and I met a year ago and we just love singing.” Hey and that’s all it takes, right? Best of luck in all your future endeavors.
Kidz Bop Kids – Last Christmas
More kids! This is less jazzy than the Little Voices version ( Day 16), but it still has kids. By kids, for kids. It’s available on amazon.com or itunes.
The Swingle Singers – Last Christmas
A really fun faux a capella version, way more involved than the previous versions we’ve posted. By using sythesizers and samplers, the Swingle Singers have demonstrated how Bobby McFerrin might have covered “Last Christmas.” Nicely done. This was recorded in 2006, too. It’s day 22, I’m tired, my head hurts, I don’t have much more to say than that.
This is available at amazon.com or more affordably on itunes.
Preap Sovath – Last Christmas (Disappeared Love)
This treat comes via “Jinga” in Phnom Penh. He says, “Kudos to you for stamina… Preap Sovath here in Cambodia did a ‘Last Christmas’ cover that sounds like he’s been listening to the Rubber Band. (Or his producers have, rather.)”
Nuala O’Halpin – Last Christmas
A nice acoustic version. This is from her You Belong to Me single, available on itunes.
And I bet you didn’t think we’d find a version in sign-language…
In case you didn’t know, BoA is a star. She has three official homepages and about thirty albums! She sounds sassy, too. This version comes from her Japanese Winter Love album released just this year and available at amazon.com.
This is a fairly traditional take, with just a little bit of funk. And it also has a mysterious guest rapper come in half-way through. We couldn’t decipher much from the fan page we found; this might be from his Happy Christmas/Last Christmas “soundtrack,” but if it is, it’s not in the tracklisting.
Jason Duong – Last Christmas
This sounds like it’s recorded over a karaoke track of the song. And that certainly is not a dis, because this guy has potential. I would say Jason Duong is just a bit inexperienced. Wet behind the ears, you might say. Searches produced a number of “Jason Duong“s, but none appeared to be our main man here.
Kan’t Fade This – Last Christmas (Johnny B Ft. Kingiee)
Whoa! I hope you didn’t stow away those glow sticks, ‘cause you’re gonna need ‘em! The only info we found on Kan’t Fade This was a mysterious blog post from March. It looks like you can get the whole album there also.
Periklis Stergianoudis – Last Christmas
This sounds quite a bit like the original. In fact, almost completely like it.
Down and Down – Last Christmas
This is a pretty difficult one to classify. Slow island-pop? At any rate, the singer tries real hard to impress, as if George Michael himself were sitting in the front row…
Unknown – Last Christmas
This one comes to us unlabeled, but here’s what we know: it’s hip-hop, it’s in a language we aren’t familiar with, and it’s a nice change of pace (even if there are a lot of hip-hop versions).
About 25 seconds in, these ladies huddle up and make a plan. “Hey girls, I really want to impress these people.”
Parenthetical Girls – Last Christmas
I am frankly pretty embarrassed by our rendition of what was at the time my favorite Christmas song. Recorded with incredible haste when I was fighting a cold, the one saving grace of this recording is the nostalgic swoon I still get during the ARP Odyssey outro at the end there. It’s ultimately pretty forgettable, which is a shame considering that the Wham! rendition is without a doubt the ultimate holiday signifier for me.
Cheekyboy – Biggie’s Last Christmas
The ghost of Christmas past brings with him an incredibly harsh fake-out: though this Biggie Smalls mash-up begins with the inconceivably brilliant suggestion of a “Last Christmas”/”Suicidal Thoughts” unified front, it quickly devolves into Sean Combs’ super weak cash-in “I’ll Be Missin’ You”. It mostly recovers with the “Juicy” coda, but that beat match is maybe a little too Alvin and the Chipmunks—which I guess is appropriate, considering the season. All in all, a good effort.
Villancicos de Chocolate – Last Christmas
My favorite rendition of the lot by a long shot—appropriately garish synths, digital piano, Spanish guitar, Spanish language, and that BEAT DROP (!)…Andrew Ridgeley would be too proud.
I recently watched the vast majority of the Smurfs Christmas special on Youtube, and was surprised to face a number of troubling uncertainties that only now seem questionable (foremost—what the fuck was up with Gargamel, anyway?). The trouble with this song, on the other hand, is crystal clear straight out of the gates: not a single “Smurfed” lyric to speak of. On second thought, maybe Igwad was covering this version.
The Boss Hoss – Last Christmas
Fairly straight cover done by a fairly straight cover band—all in a palatable Southern drawl. Did I mention that they’re German? Irreverent!
Though I gotta dock points for a number of glaring lyrical missteps, this Baltimore band succeeds in unexpected ways—the way your weird drunk cousin singing off-rhythm living room Christmas karaoke might. Which is to say: pretty successful.
There are plenty more goodies on their site too.
Mutsuhiro Nishiwaki – Last Christmas
Mutsuhiro is amazing! He makes music box renditions of songs, from Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” to the Neverending Story theme to… well… Wham! He even does a version of “Careless Whisper.”
You can find more Christmas music box songs at his itunes page.
The Revolvers – Last Christmas
Of the punk versions we’ve posted, this is truly the punkest of the pack. It’s fast, it’s loud and it’s not afraid to punk you in the face. Guess what? They’re German too!
Alex Montez Y Centerfold – Last Christmas
This is possibly the earliest cover we could find, coming from Alex Montez and Centerfold in 1989. The band isn’t around anymore, so it was tough to find info on them, but they’re definitely Spanish. And if my four years of high school Spanish haven’t failed me, I think it’s the closest translation we’ve posted to the original.
Divinus – Last Christmas
This is basically a bunch of Portuguese guys doing “Last Christmas” in Gregorian-chant style with a cheesy synth & drum track. Oh, and sleigh bells. Pretty obvious, I know.
Available on iTunes.
Fonda are a fun indie-pop combo from LA. Back in 2001, they contributed this jangly banjo- and boy/girl-harmony-laden track to Parasol Records’ “Stuck in the Chimney” compilation. swoon
Get the track on or the whole album on Amazon.
If the lilting voice and juicy-sweet production values sound ever-so-familiar, here’s why: Leigh Nash was the vocalist for Sixpence None the Richer, who made the crossover from Contempo-Christian-pop in the early 00s and were virtually inescapable during the Dawson’s Creek era. Yes, it was a simpler time. Ms. Nash has more recently embarked on a solo career, and on her just-released Christmas EP “Wishing For This” you’ll find a cover of, you guessed it, that song.
Available on iTunes
Bolk – Last Christmas (Alternative Version)
Bolk does a rock-rock-rocking version, which they have labeled as the “Alternative Version,” but alternative to what? Certainly they don’t think this is the only guitar-driven version, because we’ve posted many of those. One thing this site demonstrates is that a true alternative would be to not cover “Last Christmas.” Anyhow, their version is fun and a great add to your collection.
You can find more from Bolk on itunes.
