Have you gotten terrible inexpensive Christmas gifts that are clearly something that were picked up at the last minute without any thought?
Even worse...
The Christmas gifts are obvious that the giver did not spend much money.
You'll understand what I'm talking about if you're familiar with the NBC television show "The Office" where in an office gift exchange a giver gave the ultimate cheap Christmas gift - a used flannel shirt that was the wrong size for the recipient.
It was later told that it was just grabbed from the givers own closet that very morning of the exchange.
Ok, I know you won't be that poor, huh?
But when the times are tough, we'll want to consider inexpensive Christmas gifts here and there to cut back on holiday spending.
Ok, this may sound like a tacky approach when times are tough.
I've been there.
There are so many people to buy for during the holiday season. And I have to find great Christmas presents for reasonable prices.
I completely understand that there are situation where you don't want to spend much money on a gift, whether it's because of an occasion like an office gift exchange where you don't know the recipient that well.
Or because of overall finances for all gifts for the year.
You may don't want to bother buying a cheap Christmas gift. However, can you really avoid buying a present all together? This is especially true if you have bought for the individual in the past.
He may feel unimportant if you completely strike him/her off your Christmas list.
You also don't want to overspend just to spare a person's feelings.
I would hate to find out that someone paid too much money during the holiday season. It makes me feel feel awful if I receive a present from this person if he or she couldn't afford it. Getting a cheap Christmas gift would be better.
What ever your situation could be, inexpensive Christmas gifts are better than the other alternatives.
When I say cheap I really mean reasonable.
Inexpensive Christmas gifts are commonly associated with something tacky but it doesn't have to be. You can find lovely cheap Christmas presents that are useful and that will be appreciated.
Here are some quick ideas.
Coffee lovers always appreciate getting coffee beans for a gift. You fill a coffee mug with packets of coffee designed for single pot servings. This cheap Christmas gift is a great idea for anyone who loves coffee and it costs nothing more than the price of the mug and coffee packets.
Photo albums and frames make fantastic presents. These are a relatively inexpensive Christmas gifts. You can offset the low price by adding a priceless photograph in the frame or in the photo album. This is a wonderful cheap Christmas gift that has great sentimental appeal.
Calendars, appointment books and address books are all great thrifty ideas for this time of year. I always forget to buy a new calendar and I love anything that helps me stay organized. I would rather get inexpensive Christmas gifts that I can use than those expensive presents that I can't.
Also consider some of your favorite Christmas presents. A tin of home made cookies may have just popped into your mind.
It is important to remember that when it comes to holiday presents, it is the thought that counts. This is really true. A cheap Christmas gift that takes time, thought and effort is sometimes the best present you can give.
There are ways to give inexpensive Christmas gifts without coming off looking like a holiday scrooge or a cheapskate.
i) Dress it up in fabulous wrapping.
Presentation is everything, and if you put some time and effort into the packaging you will be surprised how much better that cheap Christmas gift will look. Using things like paper mach boxes and thick ribbon can make all the difference in the world.
ii) Use homemade goodies
Everyone always appreciates homemade gifts during the holiday season as well. Make up a batch of spiced nuts, chocolate covered pretzels or your best banana bread and package it in a gift box with some raffia and the recipient will think it looks like it came from a specialty bakery, but with the great taste of something homemade.
iii) Before giving inexpensive Christmas gifts, know the recipient
In those cases you can usually know of something that is under ten dollars that they really would want and use, whether it be their favorite scented lotion or a box of their favorite golf balls.
I know I know, giving a cheap Christmas gift is not an easy job, but when you done with caution it can turn out fabulously!
