My husband and I love cruising. While on a cruise in October of this past year we decided that it was time to take our daughters, aged 4 and 15, on a cruise over Spring Break. Once I got home I started researching and found a perfect Spring Break cruise. We decided that we could 'give' it to the girls as the kid Christmas gift ideas.
Since it was such a big present it deserved to be given to the girls in a big way! After doing a little research I came up with the idea of Christmas Tree Mail.
Each day the girls would receive an assignment, delivered in the form of Tree Mail, that they must complete. Upon completion they would earn a letter that would be given to them on Christmas Morning. The letters would then spell a clue that would help them figure out what their big holiday gift was.
Starting on December 1st the girls received letters left on the Christmas Tree.

The letters not only explained their tasks but also the reason. For example, one of the assignments required that the eldest read the youngest a special story. It also went on to say that the a new book had been placed under the Christmas tree.
I found this to be a great way to give the girls a new book as one of the kid Christmas gift ideas but to have them spend time together.
One another day they received a Tree Mail task that told them to doing something nice for their neighbors. The girls thought that baking cookies and delivering them would be the perfect solution. This resulted in us making time to bake cookies together and enjoying the Holiday season.
After the tasks were completed the girls were presented with letters on Christmas morning.

After a little coaching they figured out the the letters spelled 'Turn on the DVD player'. In the DVD player I had loaded a DVD for the cruise ship the we are sailing on. I can not begin to describe the excitement the girls displayed when they figured out that they were going on a cruise!

The girls really enjoyed receiving 'Tree Mail' during the Christmas holidays.
Although they will probably not receive a gift as big for Christmas' to come, I will continue the tradition. My 4 year old would check the xmas tree every time she got a chance to see if there was something for her to do. This was a great way for me to force myself to do the things that I wanted to do during the holidays. The tasks can be as simple as coloring a Christmas picture or as planned as riding around to see Christmas lights.
